Summary of Application Experience
6/8: Well, it's been about a year since I started this process. Last year at this time, I was starting to tackle the AMCAS and filter through schools. Then it took me a couple months to complete secondaries. Then it took a couple months to hear from schools about interviews. Then it took a couple more months to go to those interviews. And guess what, another couple months to find out if I got into those schools or not. And finally here I am, having been accepted to 3 out of the 3 interviews I chose to go on and invited to 5 interviews total. What makes it even better is that I got into my first choice, wasn't even waitlisted. This entire process is a test of mental and emotional endurance. Just believe in yourself. If this is what you want to do, you will make it someday. I didn't have the greatest GPA, had a mediocre MCAT, and did get a few C's in my classes. But there's definitely more to this than just numbers. If you have a passion for medicine, it will be reflected in your interview. I want to wish everyone luck with the process. You can do it. I was there, once. Filling out all those insane secondaries, running out to my mailbox everyday for months on end, checking my email every five minutes, going crazy during the post-interview limbo. It's a hard journey, but it will be well worth it in the end.
3/27: I can't believe it. A miracle did happen. Somehow, they decided to let me into UWSOM. I am so lucky. Never could i have pictured this day.
3/13: Got in at SUNY Downstate!! I'm soo happy!! I really loved the school when i visited. Probably will go here unless a miracle happens at my state school. But very very happy indeed.
3/6: Got an email from Temple today. Hmmm, my first interview invite in over three months. I had mentally given up on my other schools, maybe there are more surprises to come...
1/25: I'm in baby!!! I'm going to be a doctor one day. This seems surreal to me. All those years of hard work and premed stuff finally paid off. Now I can sit back, relax and see who else takes the bait.
11/18: Number 4 baby! Albany sent the email.
11/17: Got my interview invitation from Drexel in the mail. That thin envelope was a little scary. Unfortunately, they didn't have any openings til late March!! Hopefully I can squeeze in a little sooner.
11/14: I get home from a LONG day of school, ready to just hit the sack. I check the email before I do, and there it was: my first out of state interview! SUNY Downstate, watch out!
11/6: It's Sunday night and I get an email from BU. It's my first rejection....:( Sad. I really like the Boston area and my girlfriend is going to school in Boston, so my chances of attending school there have diminished significantly. Man, let's hope this isn't the start of some trend. Need some good news soon.
10/17: Thought I would create this profile to help me keep track of what's going on in this crazy process. Also, if I get lucky this time around, maybe I can give some hope for all the 'average' applicants out there in the struggle. As of now, I have finished and sent out all my secondaries. I'm complete at most of the schools, but there are a few stragglers waiting for my LOR's to get processed. I know I am a bit late in the process, but I was gone for most of the summer. Luckily I have been given an interview by my state school, which is also my top choice. Unfortunately, it is my first and only interview so far. I need to be on my A game that day. So far, this has been the most drawn out and nervewrecking experience of my life. Applying to med school is just one huge waiting game. For the next few months I will be checking my email and mailbox religiously. Hopefully I will not have to go through this process again...(fingers crossed)
