Summary of Application Experience

1. AMCAS summarized my grades incorrectly. Could not get them to make changes after 1.5 months of trying. Sent transcripts to schools with letter. Several schools told me that they did not use AMCAS's summary.

2. Ran into problem with foreign undergrad degree. Some schools like Mayo only want US undergrad. Others like Baylor and Tufts want 90 credits of US/Can undergrad work. Others will accept 90 credits of undergrad + grad work. Yet others will take a grad degree. If you have a foreign undergrad degree, go to each web site and check requirements very carefully.

3. I applied to 30 schools and sent secondaries to 20. Got 11 interviews . Went to 6. Got 4 acceptances and 2 waitlists. Upon review, applying to 20 should have been enough.

4. I chose to go to UMass. It has a good reputation academically, is friendly to non-traditionals, and is relatively inexpensive. On the whole, I am thrilled at how nice med schools have been to an older applicant. Only in the USA!
