    Summary of Application Experience

AMCAS: submitted 6/13, under review 6/18, completed 6/27

    USUHS: secondary 6/25, sent 6/30, interview 9/18
    Georgetown: secondary 7/1, sent 7/4, interview 9/15
    GWU: secondary 7/2, sent 7/4, interview 9/19
UW: secondary 7/3, completed (residency issues) 10/1, interview 11/17

8/7/2008: i received 3 interviews in 3 days. not bad. at least i only have to buy one plane ticket now. it would have been 4 interviews but uw is making me jump through hoops to verify my residency status. silly.

9/23/2008: all three interviews went well. if you get dr milzman at georgetown, talk about hockey and surfing and you will be golden. i had an ex-pilot interview me for usuhs, so we talked about our own flying experiences mostly. for gwu, i had a cardio-thoracic surgeon ask me some tough open-ended questions. all three interviewers told me they're recommending me for acceptance--as close to a verbal offer as i can tell. we'll see if i sealed the deal in a couple months or so. here are my initial impressions after the interview: gtown > usuhs > gwu. however, if i take into account the hpsp scholarship: usuhs > gtown > gwu.

10/8/2008: well, exactly one week after i finally got around to sending my residency material, uw scheduled me for an interview on 11/17. that must be a good sign. i'm sort of kicking myself for not sending my stuff in a month ago--i could be in seattle as a type this instead. they will really have to wow me to steal me away from USUHS or Georgetown though.

10/17/2008: got my first notice back since interviewing. waitlist at gwu. i hope this doesn't start a trend...it was my weakest interview, however, and i did go into it halfheartedly. we'll see what happens.

11/10/2008: competitive applicant pool waitlist to georgetown. i remember there being a distinction in getting 'CAP' over some other waitlist, but it still feels like a waitlist to me. 0 for 2. *sigh* i'm starting to think my low numbers might get the best of me.

11/18/2008: by far the most intense interview of my budding career, perhaps life. a panel interview with three md/professors, including the dean of admissions. they tore me apart. fortunately, uw would be a horrible fit for me due to their wwami program and family obligations. still, a great experience. fully expect the reject letter to be coming by snail mail on this one.

12/2/2008: finally accepted to USUHS! only took 75 days of waiting. apparently, there was some paperwork error on the academy's part. no worries though, i'm going to be a doctor...

12/18/2008: rejected from UW, not too surprised.

3/4/2008: got into georgetown! i decided months ago (after i sent my CAP letter to gtown) that i'll be attending USUHS in the fall for personal and financial reasons. one of the hardest choices i've made, especially now that i've been accepted to both schools. still, it is nice to know that i successfully weathered this year's med school application storm. hopefully med school itself won't be nearly as stressful. doubtful.
