Summary of Application Experience
Apply widely. Apply to some schools you don't think you have a shot at and apply to some that you think you have a good chance to get in. Realize you have a huge advantage at your home state school and a huge disadvantage at other state schools (especially Texas).
Also, apply early. I submitted my AMCAS June 6. There were many qualified candidates that submitted later than I did and their chances clearly suffered because of it. You can literally eliminate yourself if you wait too long to apply.
UNMC, Duke, and the Texas schools were at the top of my list. I withdrew from all other schools once I got the UNMC acceptance. I would have been happy with any and ended up at UNMC.
