GENERAL STUFF
->VOLUNTEERING: 950 hours (Clinical: 700, Nonclinical: 250)
->LEADERSHIP: management position in rural health organization; started program in rural health setting
->RESEARCH/CLINICAL WORK: 4000+ hours, 5 pubs, 1 international poster pres.
->OTHER: 2 artistic endeavors, lots of hours in service sector jobs, zero hours listed explicitly as shadowing
->THOUGHTS: was one really lucky lady this cycle! this tool was pretty helpful for me when I was forming a school list a year ago, so thought Id throw in some comments if it helped future pre-meds do the same.
was honestly *floored* with the positive vibes I got from schools this cycle because was/am a majorly non-traditional student (think non-science background/pursued different career path before/ + unique/pretty outrageous undergrad). it probably wasnt just one thing, but overall id point to leadership experiences (have a strong passion for rural health and did a lot of work on that after post-bac) and a compelling story of overcoming hardship in my early life. but most importantly, I took a lot of time and care to *carefully communicate and develop* how my story and background naturally led to the professional passions I developed in my app. from the sound of the interview, pretty sure my personal statement was what got me the interview at my top choice.
know this app process is loooong. hang in there and sending the best of luck to anyone reading!
