Summary of Application Experience
Update 4/27/08: I like Birmingham, but here is the sagest advice I can offer as an almost MS-2: DO NOT GO TO A SCHOOL THAT IS IN ITS FIRST YEAR OF IMPLEMENTING A NEW CURRICULUM. The new curriculum is great, but the implementation has been unbelievably rocky, and I think it would be that way no matter what school I was at. MEDICAL SCHOOL IS HARD ENOUGH WITH A STABLE CURRICULUM; DO NOT VOLUNTEER TO BE EXPERIMENTED UPON.
Update 5/18: I'm attending UAB. It was incredibly tough to choose to turn down BU, but when it came down to it, I really wanted out of Boston. UAB is only a 5 hour drive from my family, and has a rational cost of living. It's also a great research school, so it's all in all pretty awesome, except that my husband has to stay in Boston until he finishes. Should be about a year and a half.
Moved from Florida to Boston in 2003 for my husband to get his PhD at MIT. I don't count as a resident in Florida, where I lived my first 23 years, or Massachusetts, where I have been living for the last 3 years. I'm feeling pretty disappointed about that.
I have to go to a school where my oceanographer husband can have a decent job and/or post-doc. Let me know if you think I left any great schools for these purposes off the list. Shout out to my Harvard Extension School compadres!
