Summary of Application Experience
At best the application process is confusing in a 'black box' way and at worst it is extremely frustrating. you really have to be absolutely committed to being a doctor in order to really do well. I was not (if that wasn't obvious from my activities listed above) and I paid for it. Interviews seem to be very important if you are boarderline like myself. As for my impression of each school I interviewed at:
UNC - I am not very school-spirited so there was not much bias against this place, suprisingly. However, I thought the students were a rather boring, aloof, and homogenous group; not much in the way of diversity (if that matters to you). School itself was getting a make over and seemed to have good facilities. Definately did not leave here wanting to attend.
Wake Forest - Wow, this place is depressing. School is decent and the students were nice.
Pitt - Seemed like a great school in a fun town (despite it's rust-belt status). Students I did not like; School's philosophy was very new-age and strange; Professors that talked to us were dull; and the other applicants there at the time offered no refuge from it all. Overall, a very bad experience. I think this place feels like it is more progressive than it actually is.
Cleveland clinic - the crown jewel of my interviews; an absolutely amazing place all around. If you have any research ambitions, then you should definately apply here.
Rochester - Great people, nice school, great town. The place is kind of expensive, but seems worth it.
MUSC - great town, decent school, nice people. Expensive for OOS. Beach and history lend to this school's status.
Let me know if you have any questions.
