Summary of Application Experience
URM, non-trad applicant. Mediocre undergrad GPA but huge upward trend in 6 years of post-bac and graduate work. Great ECs that span 5 years, mix of clinical and non-clinical activities. Lots of paid clinical work experiences. Certified Medical Assistant. Some research (mostly for graduate degree in Biology).
Update: So far, I have been blown away at the attention I have received from MD programs. I remember being hesitant to even apply this cycle. This has been a remarkable ride for me thus far. I am absolutely grateful. I have worked extremely hard and I am happy to see that schools are noticing that.
I have gone back and completed my profile as much as possible. I do hope it provides some much needed help to future applicants, especially those who think they have a long-shot, as did I. This process is unpredictable and you have control of very little after you submit. Put your best foot forward and let the cycle take its course. You will be surprised by some of the outcomes. This process is truly a life experience you wont forget. I wanted to document mine. I hope it helps someone!

Would love to get considered here!

Update: I thought the interview went ok. Since it was my first one, in retrospect, it felt like the bumpiest and the least relaxed for obvious reasons. Im sad that this was my first interview, because I feel like I learned a lot from the process and format of the MMI, but only from reflecting on how I could have done so much better. Im glad that I have my own rhythm down for future interviews but it might have been at the expense of this one. Supposed to hear back either end of January or February I believe. Post Inteview:
What can I say that is already obvious about UCLA. The school is amazing. I loved touring the campus, it is absolutely one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen. The facilities are brand new, essentially. Hospital is across the street. Curriculum is pretty straightforward. For PRIME, there is a Masters component between 3 and 4th year, which is the main difference. I thought my interview went ok. I dont think it went poorly but it certainly didnt go as ideally as I would have wanted. I was nervous. I cannot believe it. I dont get nervous! I havent been nervous for any of my interviews! I think the pressure definitely got to me a little bit. Im not getting my hopes up TBH. Will be hearing back mid March I believe. Well see what happens!

Excited to interview here! Took a while to receive the secondary and was concerned I would be at a disadvantage for submitting relatively late. Surprised by the quick turn around and the invite. What an incredible program. Cannot wait to visit.
Post Interview: Really enjoyed my visit. Twas a cold, snowy day for a CA girl but I loved it! Because of the Superbowl, downtown Minneapolis was quite bustling. The school itself was nice. Some of the facilities seem a bit more dated than other schools I have visited (ex. UCLA) but not a major deterrent. I appreciated the schools commitment to inclusiveness and diversity. They definitely made it seem like an important attribute to their school and student body, which I appreciate. Nothing notably different about the curriculum. Standard clinical opportunities, etc. Would love to get accepted here! Was informed of a 4-6 week turnaround I believe, so I dont expect to hear back until end of February to mid March. Now only to wait!
Update: Was waitlisted about 4 weeks after the interview. Although, the term waitlist at this school seems to mean more so that you are still under consideration. It seems as though later on (before May 15), they will let you know if youve been accepted, rejected, or placed on the alternate list. Not sure what my chances are at this point, but will have to wait it out over the coming months. Darn!

I was quite surprised with how much I enjoyed my visit to NYMC! Twas a long day. I took the red eye from CA and landed around 7AM. Rented a car at JFK and drove up to Valhalla. Arrived a wee bit late for the informal med student breakfast but was ok. The school itself is very cute! I hesitate to use the word but I think it describes my impression perfectly. I loved it. It has a small-town vibe, which I appreciate but for those who need the urban life, the school is literally less than an hour away from NYC by public transport and less so if you have a car! Has a very New England-y vibe, at least for this CA girl. Curriculum seemed very standard. I think many people will enjoy the fact that most clinicals are in NYC or NJ, so after the first 2 years, you can definitely move to the city. Cant wait to hear back. Ill have some tough decisions to make. Turnaround is 4-6 weeks too if I am not mistake. Mas waiting!
Update: Waitlisted. I was disappointed but not surprised. In retrospect, it was a very challenging interview considering the circumstances. To make the visit cost-effective, I sacrificed a better performance. Did I mention I caught myself dozing off during the financial aid presentation?! I wouldnt be surprised if someone saw me and made a note of that. Considering my current offers, however, I dont think NYMC would be a realistic option for me anyway even with an acceptance. Them and Albany are now at the bottom of the list unless they can offer me a great scholarship/grant package. We shall see!
Update: Withdrew my application from the waitlist. Great school but the other offers I have received from my NW schools are such that I would not attend NYMC even with a good offer. I dont think I would have received an acceptance off the waitlist anyway. I appreciated the opportunity! Valhalla is a cute little town.

Update: I felt the interview at UCD went extremely well! I felt the most comfortable with this one and I again tried to be as relaxed as possible and tried to have a good time. Hoping for Dr. Sousas phone call on 01/19 (2 week turn-around for acceptances!).
Post Interview: Alas, I have been waitlisted! Im not sure about my chances at this point. Waitlist movement from previous cycle seems a bit obscure. There seems to be some movement but not much is my overall impression. We shall see. Was initially devastated at the news. I shed a tear or two after I received the email but that subsided quickly. Will explain why in a different schools section (hint: UW) ;D
Update: Accepted off the waitlist! Day after traffic day no less. Was very salty about being waitlisted here and receiving the acceptance was initially underwhelming. This immediately subsided when I was offered a nearly full-tuition scholarship! I am no longer annoyed ;D I think they sensed that I was upset and came swooping in to make me feel better. UCD was my top choice at the start of the cycle. I feel everything has come back full circle. Will have to make a tough decision between UCD and UW now. I want to see if UW can match the offer. I highly doubt it but I wont have true closure unless I try.
Update: It is official. I will be attending UC Davis for my medical education. Toughest decision I have ever had to make! But makes the most logical sense. I have a scholarship, I get stay living with hubby, close to family and support system, get to buy a house, get to have a dog, etc. Bittersweet but I am so excited! UC Davis has been on my mind since I decided to pursue medical school. This is how it was supposed to end yall. I am amazed. What a year!

Update: Accepted! Holy cow was I ecstatic for this one! I absolutely LOVED the school. Interviewed way back in November and didnt hear back until February, which was sooooo agonizing but well worth the wait for the A. Eager to see what the school can offer to offset the COA, which is astronomical compared to other schools. 60k+ is nothing to scoff at!

Invited for an interview! Whew! I was sweating through January waiting for this one. I cant believe it. Wont be interviewing until March unfortunately. Im not sure if OHSU is a school that interviews folks for the waitlist, if so, then thatll be me in this case. If not, then how amazing would it be to get accepted here! Cant wait for my visit. I am so appreciative of my West Coast schools. I feel so at home here and I feel the love. Itll be hard to leave if I choose to do so! Ill be making some tough choices for sure come April. Of course, I am very grateful for opportunities I have had this cycle and am cognizant of my privilege in having received 10 II and multiple acceptances at this point. Many people would love to be having my problems right now. I wish everyone the best.
Update: Accepted! Cant believe it! I loved OHSU. The facilities are top notch, Portland is amazing, and this years match list was incredible! Biggest downer is that COA. Few opportunities for scholarships also.
Update: Painfully declined this acceptance offer. So grateful for the opportunity!

I wasnt going to apply here after some deliberation (given the low OOR applicant matriculation rate). Have had to jump through some hoops to get this far with UW but so worth it! Grateful for the opportunity to submit a secondary. Was rejected pre-missionary statement but sent an email advocating for my case. Do read more about their screening process, as it is quite unique from most schools (I believe they weigh your GPA, freshman year is the lowest and junior year is highest. This means they dont account for senior year or post-bac, so you must email them if you are rejected based on undergrad stats but have a stellar post-bac. They encourage it!). Ultimately was granted the secondary. How exciting! Hoping for an II. Would love to have a shot at an institution ranked #1 in primary care!
Post interview:
This is surreal. Literally. I am completely shocked how this cycle has played out. I am eternally grateful to UW. The process with them from the start has been nothing but amazing. I have not felt fairly treated by many schools I have applied to and I went into this process knowing that I wouldnt be seriously considered by most schools. My application is complicated. I am complicated! UW has heard me every step of the way. I was shocked to get an interview. I loved my visit. I thought the people were very nice and supportive. The tour was great and the med students were very open to answering all kinds of questions. The Q&A with faculty was such a great experience too. The curriculum is exactly what I have been wanting too! Year 1 is traditional. Clinicals start in March of 2nd year. Plenty of opportunities for research (UW has an incredible amount of funding from the NIH and other sources). I honestly didnt think my interview went that great, especially compared to UCD, which up until that point was my top choice. This was my only traditional interview and the rest will be MMI as have been the previous 6. Suffice it to say that when I received my acceptance email, I was floored, especially because I heard back 10 days later. 10 days! I heard back from UCD in 2 weeks, which I thought was generous. Its a bit cheesy to say, but I almost feel as if its meant to be, you know? From start to finish, UW has been amazing to me. It felt right. It feels right. As of now, UW is the one I think....
Some stats that make this an eye-opening experience for me (grabbed from the UW website):
-About 7200 OOR applicants (OOR meaning not WWAMI region)
-About 110 interviewed
-About 45 are accepted
-About 18 matriculate (including 8 MSTP, which doesnt really count, does it?), so really 10 regular MD matriculants....
Update: Was informed that I was selected to receive an OOR tuition waiver. How amazing is this school, you guys!? Now, if I have to move out of state, I can at least be comforted knowing that I will be paying a reasonable tuition comparable to my in-state tuition in CA if not less!

I submitted my secondary to MCW relatively late, as I was extremely over-budget with secondaries. I went ahead and submitted though and I am glad I did so! An II to start the new year.
Update: Interview went very well! I have only experienced traditional interviews at UW and MCW, which have been my last 2 interviews. I think I excel in this format of interviewing. Its a shame! I have quite enjoyed MMIs but they dont seem to be my forte. Anyway, my visit to MCW was nice. The facilities were great. The students seem happy. I did not enjoy the group of interviewees. Many were cold and just plain flat-affected. It almost detracts from the charm of the school. My interviewers were great and asked me questions that I truly have been preparing to answer all interview season long. I think I nailed them and made the impression I wanted. Was glad to receive that Acceptance 1 week later, exactly. What a turnaround! I am impressed. That puts me at 4 acceptances thus far. I will be making some tough decisions in the coming months.
