Summary of Application Experience
Took MCAT in early June, then flew across the world to conduct some social sciences research, while trying to fill out AMCAS. Verified on 7/25. Applied to 20 schools; gave up on 1 secondary.
12/1: Had gotten 6 interviews so far, attended 3, declined 1 after 1 acceptance in state (closer to my family is a huger factor because we just moved to the US < 10 years ago), 2 more to go in January. Beyond thankful but still hoping for some more good news!
12/4: II from UNC!!!!! MADE MY DAY!
12/18: II from Duke! Am I dreaming or what? So awesome to get this one because of all those secondary essays :D
1/17/18: missed 2 phone calls from UM, no voicemail! Received the acceptance email the next day on 1/18 for MD/MPH!!! LOVE the MD/MPH program and the beach. The only downside is non Pass/Fail :(
1/31/2018: Once again missed the call from UM because I was driving and jamming to music. Someone left a voicemail this time, and I got in the MD program, too! Hip hip Hooray!
2/20/2018: BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. UNC ACCEPTANCE 20 days after interviewing. Actually got the email invitation to second look before getting a call or an acceptance email, so was very doubtful. But I called the admissions office to confirm. Got the call on 2/21, and the acceptance email on 2/22. LOL each time the excitement got less and less but then it went up again as I thought about going to school here. Very much likely will attend here!!!!

- Summary of Experience:
Received this II a couple of hours after the one from Miami. Was super shocked just like I was with Mayo. Dreams do come true, well at least 50% for now! And I love that its MMI, since I secretly want to go on one for the experience. Im really pumped about this!
1/19: God despite the traffic, I loved the city and the people who I met during the interview, both interviewees and students. Everyone was so happy with his/her choice and could articulate why they went to the school (social justice, diversity, true pass/fail, global health opportunities, etc). Compared to my interview at Mayo, the people here are def. more laid-back and friendlier. Maybe I was just more relaxed after hearing such good news from UM, but no I think people were just nicer. I loved the availability of food options and the bustling city atmosphere, since I grew up in a crowded city in Asia. Cost was definitely a down-side; one of the tour guide kept emphasizing that the rent for subsidized grad housing complex was competitive, yet it was still insanely more compared to where I live in the East Coast. There were even tandem parking! WOW... Well, its not like I need to worry about these until I get accepted hahaha

Super duper excited to actually get an II here... Not even in my wildest dream that I saw that coming, so early too! Gave me a lot of pressure though, and I should have scheduled it later since Mayo is non-rolling. Had very little sleep the night before due to various reasons. Interviewed at Jacksonville for the 2+2 Program. I definitely bombed 1 out of the 2 interviews, since I was nervous and exhausted. Please dont be like me! Eat well, rest well, and interview well! I felt that I miss my chance and was very sad during the 6 hours drive home. Just after seeing how great of an opportunity Mayo was, I felt even worse that I blew the interview. The campus was so beautiful with a lot of artworks and 3 lakes! The simulation center was mind-blowing; they had the exact replica of the exam rooms + OR! Dean Colon-Otero was so nice that he introduced me to a doctor who did the same kind of work I had for my undergrad thesis! It was a phenomenal experience. Now I just gotta wait til February to see if I got any chance or did I let the best opportunity in my life slip away?
God as the day nears, my hope just slowly vanishes because of all these other people getting the highly ranked emails. But hey they deserve it. I know my interviews did not go so hot.

A person can dream! I enjoyed filling out this secondary, kind of, after finishing it.
Post-interview day:
OMG.... Its true that you dont know how much youd fall in love with a school until you visit. Gosh maybe its just human nature (Im so skeptical of this phrase but Im going to use it for the lack of a better thought) to want something that is out of reach. I love the students, Dean Armstrong, Dukes teaching philosophy/curriculum, other applicants, EVERYTHING! Maybe I was too complacent with myself that I forgot what it felt like to aim high and try my best. I was always that driven before college, but throughout college, my energy was just placed somewhere else instead of aiming for academic excellence. Now that I saw what a place like Duke can offer in my medical career, I must say that Ill never let myself find complacency ever again. I even felt worse after my MMI performance. Freaking misinterpreted a prompt, but it was okay. I guess in the grand scheme of things, as Duke has reminded me what opportunities out there are awaiting me in this land of dreams, I can do my best in med school and match to the best residency. Thank you Duke!

Loved the curriculum, but honestly the school can sell itself a little better, especially with such a contrast with Duke... Its still my top choice because of an amazing network Id establish if I got in and the global health opportunities it offers! Please love me! The wait is so brutal :(
I GOT IN! VERY MUCH WILL ATTEND. I LOVE YOU UNC.

Was happy that I heard back by the time they told me I should ideally hear back (within 5-6 weeks). First interview, first acceptance!
The students were super nice, but I did not feel that the school had a lot to offer. It did not impress me as much as other facilities. But I admire their commitment to the mission of serving locally (which we sorely need in the US). Im guilty of this myself since I really want to be involved in global health in my career, but I believe the most effective way to improve health care is through local involvement.

I really had no expectation/idea about SLU. I stayed with a host student, and she was super nice. She took me to her Anatomy Lab, which got me super excited about medical school. I got 9 hours of sleep this time, and was in a very very relaxed mood, which made a huge difference compared to my Mayo experience. I was able to chat confidently with my interviewer, who was a retired doctor and was really nice, patient, and gentle. He basically showed me how the school would assess me, and told me that I should expect an offer, but I wont buy his words until I receive the call! The hospitals were fantastic; the childrens hospital was so cute. Concerns about crimes did not really bother me, since I have heard complains about crimes everywhere, especially for growing up in one of the biggest cities in a third-world country. Sorry for going side-track but overall, I believe SLU has a lot to offer. The only downside is the expensive tuition and the Catholic affiliation, since I am passionate about reproductive rights (*cough, abortion) that itd be kind of awkward to foster this interest here. But I did see a Planned Parenthood center, so maybe it wont be much of an issue.

The secondary was insanely long; it felt like it would never end. But Im glad I filled it out. i think I only chose MD-MPH when applying, but that landed me earlier consideration I think. Im excited about this school; I hope I can take all the negative comments with a grain of salt.
1/17/2018: Accepted to the MD/MPH program! Soooo soooo excited when I saw two missed calls from the admissions office, considering that they told us during interview day we should not expect to hear from them until the next decision day. Tried calling back but could not get any response, but received the acceptance email the next morning while waiting for my plane to UCLA. I really enjoyed Miami and the students I interacted with. My host students from both MD and the dual program were all so nice. Loved to see some public health efforts (needle exchange program) around the city, which was initiated by a UM grad too. Id be happy to go here if I were not to be accepted by any other program. However, well have to see what FA and scholarship options are available. So I guess Ill keep waiting. The only strange thing about the interview was that not a lot of the students, faculty, or staff members at UM spoke Spanish even thought they were serving people in whats essentially little Cuba. Maybe Ill be guilty of the same thing, considering how s****y my Spanish is!
1/31/2018: accepted to MD program, too. I think my heart is pretty set on getting the MPH, though. But please please let me know financial information!
