3/16/06: Declined acceptance to UMDNJ-SOM today, and withdrew from PCOM admissions process. I found a place to live in Nashville this week! It's awesome! I can't wait for school to start!
2/20/06: I guess I should post my overall thoughts on this process at some point... so starting now wouldn't be a bad idea. Overall, I think this process is a huge crapshoot. People with amazing numbers and ECs sometimes don't get in, while people with pretty crappy numbers like mine somehow manage to prevail every once in awhile. I'd like to say that I don't think it's common with my numbers to get into medical school on your first try. I think I was just lucky and God somehow decided to shine down on me this cycle, that being the case, I'm going to make sure that I use the opportunity to the fullest and do my best to beast my classes when I get to Nashville (not that I wouldn't have otherwise, but you get the point.. it's even more important to me now I guess.) To everyone who wants advice from the low gpa'ers that somehow managed to get in: DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO GET GOOD GRADES! You will worry less, you will not have to explain yourself as much at interviews. Go to post-bac if you have graduated with low numbers and blow your graduate GPA out of the water. Do nothing but school for the whole year if you have to (no work, no clubs... you get the point). But most of all, do what is right for you. If you know you are weak in one particular area, do what you can to fix it before you apply, so that when they ask you something about it, you can tell them what you're doing to alleviate it. GOOD LUCK!
2/13/06: It's pretty much official people. Meharry Medical College Class of 2010. I sent in the deposit today... so unless something crazy happens, I'll be in Nashville come June!
2/6/06: I'M GOING TO MEDICAL SCHOOL!!!!! Meharry has decided to accept me by some grace of God!!! I'm soooo excited! My mother has called every family member she can think of and my brother nearly busted my eardrum on the phone! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sooo glad to know that I'm definitely going to be somewhere next year! YES!!!!!!!!!
Side Note: Since I got into Meharry, I'm cancelling my 2/13 interview at PCOM-GA... no sense in wasting the money to fly down there since I already know I like Meharry!
2/4/06: UMDNJ-SOM interview was yesterday... I think it went ok, not fabulous but not horrible. We'll find out how bad it was when decisions are made on the week of Feb 20. In other news, got rejected from Drexel University today and still no word from Meharry.
2/1/06: Still no word from Meharry, but I am headed to UMDNJ-SOM tomorrow for my first DO interview, which is quite exciting. I haven't had the opportunity to see the campus and stuff there yet, so it will all be totally new for me. In other news, I got an interview invite for PCOM-GA... too bad it's the same day as my Cell Physiology exam... which means I'm gonna have to change my exam schedule around again.. my prof is going to LOVE me. BUT I GOT ANOTHER INTERVIEW!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!
1/28/06: Still waiting on the decision from Meharry. The waiting is killing me. I'm all but accosting the mail people every day... I wonder if they think I'm crazy.
1/24/06: Had a meeting with the Dean of Student Outreach at VCU. I've been meeting with her periodically throughout the school year. She informed me that my grades last semester were not high enough to warrant an interview at VCU. So basically I could either wait for the rejection letter to come in OR I could just withdraw myself. I decided to just do it myself so that I could save the committee the time of going through my application and all that jazz to tell me that they're not going to offer me an interview. At least she was straight up with me.
1/14/06: Meharry interview went well by all accounts. The school is great and the students are really friendly. Should hear back from them by the end of the month according to the Dean of Admissions.
1/9/06: Letter from UMDNJ-SOM came in today... looks like I'll be interviewing there in February!
1/6/06: Got rejected from Penn State today. Surprisingly not upset about it, but then again, I didn't really expect to get in there anyways. Congratulations to those who do get in there though!
I didn't submit my AMCAS or AACOMAS until the last week of August because I decided to apply at the last minute. I'm in post bac at VCU right now, studying Physiology and I had originally intended to roll my program over into a masters and take two years, so I wasn't going to apply for the 2006 cycle. But after much thought and consideration, I figured trying couldn't hurt and it would give me the experience of doing the whole application process. If I get in GREAT, if I don't get in then, I think I'll just finish up my masters and try again.
I was also an August 2005 MCATer.
