Really nice school. I had about 3-4 hours of sleep. Heres what they do: they do the interview first instead of last. They start out with a group interview and then afterwards its a one-on-one interview. After the interviews, then we take a tour with the student ambassadors. We come back to the conference room to get some presentations about the curriculum and financial aid. We also get to sit in a PBL session to see what happens. The tuition is very cheap and the cost of living is cheap as well. Theres no on-campus housing. For anatomy, you dont dissect the cadavers, they are prosected. The curriculum is PBL and its 2 hours, 3 times a week. Theres a dress code. The turnaround time is quick and they notify you of a decision within a week apparently. We were told that there is an accepted waitlist so it might take 4 weeks to ultimately get accepted. I got really tired after the interview, but for the interview I felt pretty good. The group interview is similar to an MMI where they will give you a scenario and you have to come up with a decision and reason why you made that decision. The one-on-one interview is done to gauge your understanding of the research process. Altogether, the main themes of the interview are your motivation for osteopathy, how you reason in ethical scenarios, and your understanding of the research process. I thought I did well and I used my extensive shadowing experience to my advantage alluding to it several times. I felt like I outperformed the others during the group interview, but thats just what it seemed like to me. I could be wrong. I also felt like I did well in the one-on-one interview. Well see what happens, I am hoping for good news. I was tenuous about LECOM, but now Im quite impressed.

Woah, where to begin? First off, I was able to stay at a Holiday Inn for a reduced price by mentioning UNE to the receptionist. This time I didnt have to stay at a crappy motel. If youre considering DO schools, consider this one. Let me explain why. Firstly, location is very important. And in this case, the location is amazing. Its right near the water. If you are used to the city, Portland is not too far away. Theres great dining at Kennebunk and other areas. Maine is known for its seafood and its great restaurants. The price of living is not overwhelming. I think one of the med students who is rooming with a few others, pays $300-400 and another who also rooms with others, pays like $700. One of the things that jumped out at me is the sense of community in the med school. I rarely saw this at other schools and Ive been to quite a few of them. I saw it at RowanSOM the first time I went so theres something to be said about UNECOM in terms of student community. Overall, the interview day is short because they have to do the same routine with the PM interviewees that came in after us at around noon. Now, I must say about the interview that it really is conversational and laid-back. A lot of the times they say it is, but it doesnt feel that way. I thought it was because my two interviewers would sometimes talk with each other instead of probing me the entire time. It felt like a real conversation and it got better as the interview went on. There are no trick questions and they are here to see why you want to be a doctor and what your interest is in osteopathy. Mix in some anecdotes here and there and some of what student life is all about and thats how the interviewers make it conversational. Something to note is that student life appears to be quite busy and a couple of the students said that they study for maybe 2-3 hours a day outside of class. The lecture halls are usually quite busy meaning that students go to class. The curriculum is composed of two main courses: OMK and OCS. OMK is Osteopathic Medical Knowledge and is basic science information. OCS is more along the lines of standardized patients, OMM, physical exam, and clinical skills. First year is physio and second is patho, so it is not fully integrative. There is some degree of integration though in the sense that subjects are not done in isolation and are evoked throughout pre-clinical years. There is a teaching fellowship available for third-year students that is apparently super-competitive in which they give an entire year of teaching and throughout that time, tuition is waived and a stipend is given. However, you will be attending med school for five years. Half a year of teaching is done in third year and another half is done in fourth year. Altogether, UNECOM is a phenomenal medical school and is probably one of the nicest Ive been to.
Whatever....

So there is a lot to get to here. Let me start off by saying it was an amazing experience and I arrived in the afternoon after a 6-7 hour drive. My motel was right on the beach, but I relaxed in my room for most of the first day before the interview. I had a headache but I chilled on my bed with my laptop and my headache went away. Later, I got some Popeyes and I went back to my motel and I went to sleep. I slept from 12 to 5 and thats not a lot of sleep. What made it worse is that I woke up several times throughout the night. Anyway, I didnt do much until 7:17 am when the sunrise was going to happen. I wanted to watch a beach sunrise. I couldnt see much because the sun was blocked by civilizations buildings and infrastructure. The interview was at 9:30 am, so I started to get ready. I had some troubles like getting lost and so I wasnt able to eat the food I had gotten from McDonalds. Oh well. I drove to the school and the first thing one notices is how modernized and beautiful the medical school and hospital are. First thing we did was simulated patient interaction. This is done starting the first week of M1. Then, Dr. Kimble comes in to talk and gives a thorough presentation of EVMS, the big names, and the economic impact of the school. Later, we have our tour throughout the childrens hospital. After that, theres lunch and so I go to my car and get my McDonalds and enjoy it during the lunchtime presentation. Our presenters were two students who gave a talk about all the stuff thats available in the area and what students do in the med school. After that, its interview time and I expected one thing and got the complete opposite. I tried to adjust the best I could, but I dont know if I did it well. I may have given some vague answers, however I was specific on most occasions. My weak point was talking about my research. I got caught off guard with the question he asked. After the interview, I stuck around and talked to fellow interviewees and students. I also talked to admissions for a specific reason. Then, I left, returned my motel key, filled my gas tank, and started driving home.

Ok, so I interviewed here two years ago and it has changed markedly. Firstly, they changed the interview site which threw me off and made me late to interview day. They are much more organized because two years ago, it seemed like they werent even expecting me. I walked in while the presentation had already started and I believe it was Dr. Watkins then another gentleman who I forgot his name. He was a taller African-American gentleman and I remembered him from two years ago and I shared my story about him talking about boxing and how Compubox awards a punch landed even if the punch does no damage. His eyes lit up and we talked more about boxing and why I was late to the interview. The interview was quite long and I believe it was with a PhD interviewer. It was almost an hour and I rattled off everything I could about how the last 6 years brought me to the chair that I was sitting in. During the tour, I was quite impressed about how the school had changed. Last time, they showed us a room for PBL. Now, theres a building. Also, they have a new building for interviews. Also, they showed us an OMM room that I dont remember seeing last time. While we were in the OMM room, I received an invite from another school so I gasped while they were talking and that may have been rude. Overall, it was good and Im seriously considering Rowan.

Disturbingly short interview. Asked me one simple question: What have I done since I graduated? After that, he asked me if I had any questions and so I gave him some simple questions about housing and curriculum. After that, it was done. Long Island obviously is extremely nice- theres no doubt about it. My uncle had his wedding over there and I got to drive around in Glen Head and look at the very spacious area. Old Westbury is nice. I suppose the only downside is the living expenses which doesnt help when you will be charged out-of-state tuition.
