Brief Profile:
1. Research: Participated in Breast Cancer research since January 2013, worked full time (and have been paid since) summer 2014 as I joined a research internship. I won a $1500 research grant through my university for my own project. Currently I work 15 hours a week. I've been working on my own project for over a year now and have had 3 poster presentations and spoke on a local radio station about my work. Summer 2015, I'm participating in a paid-research abroad program and will live in Sweden for 3 months in a collaborating lab to understand the proteins we work with in a different way. Strong LoR. - Spoke at an NIH/MHIRT Conference in San Diego about work in Sweden - Poster presentation at 3 University conferences - Poster Presentation in International Conference, Cambridge, UK during summer of 2015 2. Hospital Volunteering: I've been an ER volunteer for 10 months, about 4 hours a week. (quit after acceptance though haha) 3. Planned Parenthood: I've volunteered with them for 6 months then moved into an internship position (total length of involvement: 1 year) where I create my own programs for outreach. I am working on setting up, fundraising for, and teaching health classes at local women's shelters. Strong LoR. - Currently on Speaker's Bureau and work closely with on-campus Planned Parenthood club, Vox 4. Health Start: I was an intern with the Pima County Public Health Office summer 2014 where I assisted community aides in home visits. In these visits, we'd meet with a pregnant woman and teach her how to have a successful pregnancy. Once the baby was born, we'd continue bi-monthly visits to ensure the baby was developing normally and be a support for the mothers (many of whom were illegal immigrants, single, and often without a high school diploma). I decided I wanted to work in women's health at this point. 5. Global Medical Brigades: I went for a week-long brigading trip with my university in rural Honduras. 6. Clinical Shadowing: I have nearly 200 hours of shadowing. I've seen Ob/Gyn, Oncology, and Internal Medicine. I will have a strong LoR from the Ob/Gyn I shadow, she's awesome and lets me do small procedures (measuring pregnant women, finding fetal heartbeats, pap smears, and well-women's exams). I've shadowed her since Oct 2013. 7. Clubs: - I'm in a pre-medical club (Faces in Health Professions, we focus on serving underserved populations in the local community) and have been a member since my 1st year. I was on the E-board as the publicity director last year, this year I'm the secretary, currently the president. - I'm in UBRP Ambassadors, we work to reach out to the community about science education. I have been in the club for one year and served as the publicity director, currently president of this club.
I filled out 90% of my secondaries while I was working abroad in Sweden. A word of advice, please choose your school lists effectively! I spent countless nights trying to finish secondaries and Skyping with my mom at odd hours to try and correct the essays.
I got my first interview at the beginning of September, my second interview in the middle of September and then I didn't hear anything for 6 weeks. The wait was extremely hard at first and I got discouraged. I understand how difficult it is to do nothing but wait, I wished I had more control over the outcome of my applications. I kept trying to figure out if something was wrong - but there wasn't. Waiting is the hardest thing to do, however, it's the only thing we can do during this cycle. So make your wait more enjoyable!
12/10/15: I withdrew my application from most schools. The few schools I haven't withdrawn from are schools I would attend an interview for. I am SO excited about Johns Hopkins!!

Placed on Pre-II hold. TBH, I'd rather go to Phoenix than here for sure. The facilities are much older and Phoenix has the funds and a cool new curriculum.
