Summary of Application Experience
1/3/05 - I think applying early was a big help. At most places, I got early interviews, which is an advantage, at least psychologically. I also got in early at UMich, which allowed me to withdraw from a number of schools.
I would advice applying to a carefully selected group of schools. I only applied to 13, which I think is a pretty sane number, especially if you can withdraw from some pre-interview. I think I would have gone crazy if I had applied to 20+ schools, but that might just be me.
2/11/05 - I'm now waiting to hear back. Ugh.
2/28/05 - I was just accepted at Cornell. Woo-hoo! It's a great school, and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully the waiting for other schools will end soon as well.
3/3/05 - I just found out from my parents that I was waitlisted at Columbia. I will decline the waitlist though, as I think Cornell is just as good a school, and I preferred the latter's location in NYC. I've also withdrawn from Sinai after the Cornell acceptance.
3/22/05 - Lots of waitlists. I hope I get off at either Penn and Stanford, my top two choices.
3/24/05 - Waitlisted at Yale. I wasn't thrilled with the school when I visited, so I promptly withdrew. It looks like I'll be attending Cornell in the fall, or Stanford or Penn if I get off the waitlists.
4/1/05 - Just found out that I got a partial merit scholarship from UMich. Wow! I totally didn't expect anything like that. This certainly changes things, as I was anticipating going to Cornell.
5/5/05 - Decided to drop UMich. It's a great school, but I've been away from the midwest for too long. And I can't really see myself moving back at this point. I've put down my deposit at Cornell, and I'm still on the waitlists at Stanford and UPenn.
