Summary of Application Experience
Bioengineering major, graduated may 2012, submitted primary in june 2012, complete at most schools mid-august..
My app: I think my only strength was my MCAT score, everything else about my app is just blah. My ECs, although very meaningful to me, were pretty typical for pre-meds (research, volunteering, club leadership, etc.). I only had 40 hours of shadowing and had only started my clinical volunteering a few months before applying. But my only regret about this cycle was being slow on getting my last LOR completed; it delayed my completion at most schools until mid-August.
My schools: Being a nervous Californian, I applied to ~30 schools even though everyone told me to apply to less. Midway through the application process, I can say I am very happy with the number and range of schools I applied to. The process really is such a crapshoot. For instance, I was fortunate to receive relatively early interviews and acceptances to NYMC and SLU, but haven't heard from other schools such as Rush, SUNY Downstate, and Temple (edit: got II's to SUNY and Temple, although kinda late in the game). Likewise, I interviewed at WashU but no II's from ANY UC's. So overall, I am happy that I applied to a good number of "safety," mid-range, and reach schools.
