My first year out of nursing school, I worked on a medical-surgical unit at two different hospitals. During that time, I often stayed over and worked in the ICU, cardiac step down unit, or mental health unit. When I became pregnant with my first child five years ago, I started an emergency room admission nurse position. This job quickly morphed into a utilization nurse position, and I currently work as a case manager on the medical floors and in the emergency room.
Provided emotional support to women who are either currently suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, dealing with life after hyperemesis, or preparing for another pregnancy.
Volunteered as a lunch aide for local elementary school. My mom works as a lunch aide, so whenever someone called in sick, the school would call me to see if I could help out. The teachers knew me from when I went to school there. I helped in the lunch room and kept the kids safe during recess.
Helped elderly neighbor get her mentally disabled son out of his wheelchair and into bed each night, watched son when neighbor went to the grocery store, did light house keeping, and spent some nights with neighbor as her health declined before she passed away.

Summary of Application Experience
I applied this cycle without having an MCAT score. I was sick and in the hospital for three months during the summer when I was first planning to take the test. After getting a little better in the fall, I decided to try my luck. I applied to schools that took the January 2013 MCAT (which are all DO). I was invited for an interview to Erie at the end of November, attended, and was rejected a week later. I ended up not taking the MCAT in January since I was not accepted anyway and had just had a baby in December.
I plan to take my time studying for the MCAT and take it in June of 2103 and apply with a complete application. Overall, I don't regret applying. It was fun, and later I can tell my daughter that she attended her first medical school interview before she was even born since I was 36.5 weeks pregnant with a PEG tube at the time.
