Summary of Application Experience
Due to the more than significant bias against Out of Province appplicants at most med schools in Canada, and the fact Ottawa and Mac's selection procedures seemed random, I chose only to apply to three in Ontario schools - Queen's, Western and U of T. I was quite unimpressed with U of T's attitude and organization. . . wasn't too upset when I didn't get an interview. Interviewed at Queen's and Western - both schools impressed me, but was a little worried about the layout of the Queen's curriculum (clerkship electives at the END of 4th year) and the small size of the Queen's Patient base. Was accepted by Western and I was ecstatic about it!
Applying to med school is a stressful process. But so is med school - you need to learn how to be able to relax and let things happen, once you've done the necessary groundwork. And it's definitely worth it, though there will be times you don't think so when your debt statements reach the tens of thousands and the work piles up. There's also a certain amount of randomness/luck/bs to applying so if you don't succeed the first time DON'T give up - it might just have been a case of getting a wierd interviewer or essay evaluator and not a testament to your worth as an applicant.
Good Luck and hopefully I'll see you on rounds!
