Summary of Application Experience
Definitely agree that this process seems random! That\'s a little bit of a copout though and it\'s been said way too much. Maybe because it seems pretty true? Students I interviewed with who sit on AdComs have said that it all depends on which AdCom member gets your application first and whether they like it enough to advance it. I suppose that\'s the luck of the draw. But, it\'s definitely true that some AdCom members like certain qualities and other members like different qualities. That\'s what keeps the class mixes interesting, I suppose.
I guess that most people would say I applied very late. I definitely used the secondary application deadlines liberally--I took them at face value sometimes. Did this hurt me? Maybe at a few places. On the other hand, I got interviews from some of the places at which I applied latest. Go figure.
I feel like I had a good mix of schools on my list. I purposefully created a list that included out of state public, out of state private, Ivy, religious, and in-state public & private. I feel like the application had decently broad appeal since I interviewed at at least one school in each category. My original predictions were that I\'d get 1 interview for every 5 schools I applied to and 1 acceptance for every 5 interviews. In the end, I applied to 19 programs and got 8 interviews. 3 acceptances and 2 waitlists (so far). Fortunately for me, my math proved to be worse that I thought it\'d be. The lesson in all this is that you want to maximize whatever you can control in the process: GPA & MCAT are obvious...but you can also try to absorb the inevitable probability of being rejected by applying to a good number of schools.
More later!

Pre-secondary? Ouch! There was that question about whether I could substitute one of many possible courses for a semester of English. I have the dreaded AP English on my transcript.
Summary of Experience:
Pre-interview reject! Damn, that sucks. Lots of applicants tho & pretty expensive. Oh well, there\'re plenty of schools in Boston.
Summary of Experience:
Miami, Miami...Miami. It\'d be great to live there, but I got mostly silence from this school. The office took pretty long to get back to emails, but the staff were always friendly.
Summary of Experience:
Most Californians fear UCSF\'s reputation as a stats powerhouse, but they\'re about more than that. More than that AND stats. If you\'re thinking of applying and you\'re IS, go ahead. Stoked when I got the secondary! They take a long time to review stuff, but they\'re thorough and I appreciate that.
Summary of Experience:
Needless to say, stoked about the interview. So many fabulous candidates. Faculty interview went for 2 hours! It was a marathon of compliments & he even brought gifts for me. In the dean\'s office! Super cool guy...kept saying things like \"When you come here...\" and \"This school was BUILT for you!\" Ultimately the decision wasn\'t his alone though, and I got voted down. This school messes with your head...but it messed with mine in a good way. Yeah, disappointed I didn\'t get in...but happy to be reassured that the skills they valued will be used elsewhere!
Summary of Experience:
Georgetown! COOL! It\'d be exciting to be in DC for school. Health care reform debate...ritzy neighborhood...Jesuits...social justice...I like it. Lots of ortho placements.
First interview. Felt like I stammered a bit. Not terrible, but not my best. Interviewed during Snowmageddon--if I could get there from LA, why couldn\'t the admissions staff all get there from 10 miles away? Met a lot of cool people & ended up giving rides to a few of them. Students aren\'t shy about showing off the anatomy lab. Students seemed happy, if not aloof. Damn expensive.
Summary of Experience:
Submitted very late, but I liked the excitement the school generated in the Phoenix medical community, its collaboration with ASU, and its small student body. A little wary since it\'s a new school, but jazzed about its 21st century approach to learning and its dynamic curriculum. Too bad they take so few OOS!
Summary of Experience:
Expensive! Med school in a really tall building? Cool program that brags about how well respected it is in terms of producing quality clinicians. They interview in what essentially feels like a series of phone booths. Very centralized interview day, complete with introductions to interviewers! Nice!
Summary of Experience:
Loma Linda has the nicest paper of any medical school I applied to--no, seriously.
I like that they send letters for everything...kinda old school, but at times inconvenient. I love their new medical school building. Crazy nice facilities & by far the best anatomy lab I saw during the season (LCDs everywhere & HUGE). Interviews went well...a lot of the time during the student interview, we just walked & talked. For folks who want to practice unapologetically Christian medicine, this is THEE place to go.
Summary of Experience:
Still waiting? You bet! Hopefully they\'ll let me know before second look, cuz I\'d really like to go. Excellent option...any UC in SoCal is cool with me. It\'d definitely be a fierce competitor with Davis--but who\'d win out? Still thinkin on it ;)
Update 5/2/10: Had my cell on silent today...just relaxing... Saw I had a voicemail & it was good news! Stoked.
Summary of Experience:
Dartmouth is really good about making you wait...and wait...and wait...and wait. I thought I was going to be passed over for an interview FOR SURE and it came out of the blue. They like to schedule things very quickly after the invitation, which can make travel arrangements a little pricey =/
Even though they made me wait for the interview, they were pretty quick about the acceptance! First one!! I\'m a city boy, so Hanover (all 2 blocks of it) is pretty small by my standards. Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is so modern and so well laid out. Huge lack of patient & student body diversity, but Jim Kim is there! How much of an effect will his vision have on the medical school???
Summary of Experience:
Second acceptance. YES. California school & I have family in Sacramento. Fell in love with Davis: MedEd building, students, hospitals & student-run clinics. Amazing program. True P/F. Didn\'t expect to hear from them til May, but so glad they let me in =)
