As a Resident Assistant, I am responsible for creating a productive, memorable, and safe residential experience for students living in the residence hall. Resident Assistants build strong interpersonal relationships with their residents in order to connect them with campus resources that ensure their success as both individuals and students. I am currently an RA in the USF Honors College Living Learning Community (HLLC).
I volunteered in the post-anesthesia care unit at Moffitt Cancer Center. My duties included providing food and drinks to recovering patients, transporting patients to valet parking or the cafeteria when they were discharged, and retrieving family members of patients after surgery was complete.
At Shriners Hospitals for Children, I shadowed two orthopedic physicians. I observed one physician in his clinic and other in the operating room, where I was able to observe an osteotomy on the radial bone of a young boy.
Shadowed Interventional Cardiologist. I observed him conduct treadmill and nuclear stress tests, interact with a diverse patient population, and interpret echocardiograms as well as electrocardiograms.
Shadowed Interventional Cardiologist. My time at his clinic helped me understand the importance of providing care to the medically underserved as well as the unique challenges this type of care poses for physicians.
Assisted with the synthesis and analysis of non-natural peptidomimetics mimicking biologically active peptides. These peptidomimetics can be used in treatments for HIV, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and bacterial infections.
Conducted research on one of the proteins responsible for causing Alzheimer’s disease, tau protein; I am trying to determine if this protein also causes breakdown of the blood-brain barrier. Laboratory techniques I have learned to use include dot blotting, immunohistochemical staining, restriction enzyme digests, stain analysis and bacterial transformations. I completed an Honors Thesis on my work.
As a senator, I was responsible for confirming new members of our executive branch appointed by the newly elected student body president, allocating money to student organizations, and voting on legislation that would affect students during the summer term. I also served on the Committee for Community and Governmental Affairs, which involved writing letters to Florida legislators regarding student affairs and organizing events that educated students about Florida's legislators.
I play violin in this ensemble, attend weekly rehearsals, and prepare for concerts with the jazz band and choral ensemble every semester. This orchestra is for Honors students and both music and non-music majors.
The USF Health Orchestra is a musical organization of medical students, staff, faculty, and undergraduate students. I currently attend weekly rehearsals and participate in three orchestra concerts during the year.
The USF Chemistry Society is an organization that is dedicated to providing community service, chemistry tutoring, and educating students of all ages about the importance of chemistry in everyday life. Through this organization, I was able to participate in my first Relay for Life event and become a peer mentor to high school students as a part of the organization's Science for Every Student event.
I have played violin for nine years, starting in sixth grade. Throughout middle and high school I received numerous state and district performance awards from the Florida Orchestra Association. In high school, I volunteered as a student conductor and served as Vice President of my orchestra. I also gave private violin lessons to underclassmen in order to prepare them for our fall and spring concerts. Every school year I was able to participate in music performance assessments throughout the state of Florida, preparing and practicing selected repertoires for months and performing the music for orchestral judges. I currently play violin as an undergraduate in two major university orchestras.
At USF, students are named to the Dean’s List of Scholars for completing over 12 credit hours each semester, achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.5, and being in the 90th percentile in their respective college for their academic performance.
I run at least three miles, four days a week. My current running goal is to run the 5K, 8K, 15K, and Half Marathon races at the Gasparilla Distance Classic next February after I graduate from USF.
