Summary of Application Experience
I spent the 2007-2008 academic year volunteering in a very rural area in South America. So, applying from half way around the world without a phone and minimal internet CAN be done. But, I think it hurt me a little on those schools with rolling admission like Mayo and U of Chicago because I had to push back my interview date by a number of months. For Mayo, I actually interviewed on the very last day that they held interviews (Feb. 15) although I was invited for an interview in Nov.
Sitting on so many waitlists was agonizing. But, I got into my top two choices in the end (Mayo and Columbia) !!!! I think that my letter campaigns paid off. And, on May 9, I got into Mayo! A week later Cornell came around, and I finally got into Columbia on a second interview with Dr. Frantz in June. He is such a wonderful, understanding interviewer. I would have loved to go there, but couldn't afford the +$200,000 ultimate debt. Plus, it's hard to beat the amazing facilities and people at Mayo.
