Summary of Application Experience
Prior to actually applying to med school, I was naive and believed that my strong numbers would carry me considerably further than they actually did. My extracurriculars are merely average and most of my secondaries were not complete until October, so I now feel fortunate even to be holding multiple acceptances. I have two pieces of advice for future applicants:
1. Apply early and broadly. You hear it so much that it's become cliche, but there's no doubt that having all of your secondaries finished prior to August gives you a major leg up on the competition.
2. Find an extracurricular activity that truly sets your application apart. Standard ER volunteer work is only going to get you so far. Spend a summer doing humanitarian work in a foreign country, found an on-campus organization, take up triathlons, whatever. Just find something that makes you unique and stick with it; it will look great on an application and will serve as a fantastic conversation piece during your interviews.
It's a long, grueling, gut-wrenching process, but plucking that fat acceptance envelope from your mailbox makes it all worth it.
