  • Application cycles: 2007
  • Demographics: Female, Caucasian
  • Home state: Tennessee
  • Brief Profile: I transferred from Rose to UT after fall quarter junior year. My GPA reflects a so-so freshman year as an engineering major (including some B's, a C, and a D) followed by 4.0's the rest of the way (once I decided to go pre-med). So, I had a strong upward trend that I explained in my PS.

    Work/Clinical:
1.5 yrs at hospital (research and other non-clinical stuff), Kaplan MCAT teacher, other jobs, 200+ hours shadowing

    Research:
summer NSF-REU in ecology (presented at a conference, no pubs), 1 pub pending from hospital job

    Community service:
ESL tutor, free clinic volunteer, week-long work trip to New Orleans

    Other:
3 seasons Div III soccer at Rose (captain, some school records), PBK and Top Graduate at UT, student pilot, gap year spent working for a Katrina recovery nonprofit in New Orleans

I hope this profile is useful in some way. I'm very excited about my decision. Good luck to everybody applying, and feel free to leave comments if you have any questions!

    Summary of Application Experience

*Vandy only sends secondaries to people who get interviews, so I found out about my interview before I got the secondary.

6/16 AMCAS submitted (transcripts already received)
    6/20 AMCAS verified
    7/30 My first interview invite!
10/17 First acceptance!! I'm going to be a doctor when I grow up!!!
10/30 Four waitlists in one week. yuck.
1/31 I'm in at my third choice and #1 or #2 would just be icing on the cake. Life is good. :)
3/3 I axed everyone but UT and Einstein and am just waiting on Harvard and Emory. Pretty excited about Einstein if those two don't work out.
3/12 So I was invited to interview for one of five $80K scholarships from UT-Memphis. After a whole lot of consideration, I withdrew my acceptance. I'll probably regret this at some point, but as my career goals turn more towards research and public health work, I think I need a med school environment more conducive to that type of thing. There was no guarantee I would have gotten the scholarship anyway, and its renewal was contingent on a certain GPA, which I don't want to have to worry about. Right? Right...
3/25 Waitlisted at Emory and rejected by Harvard. I'm going to Einstein!
9/8 Update: I love Einstein!! Leave comments if you have any questions about the school.

Total cost (including $1500 Kaplan course, MCAT, apps, suit, travel, everything): a little over $5K
