  • Application cycles: 2008
  • Demographics: Male, East Asian
  • Home state: Louisiana
  • Brief Profile: Spent a summer in the Philippines shadowing an appointed rural health doctor; I did the usual stuff and also got to put needles in people.

Besides that, nothing. I wasn't into the whole pre-med thing because I thought I would just get my degree (Chemical Engineering), and then start worrying about apps. It's all a silly game anyway, logging wasteful hours of pushing wheelchairs and shredding paper, as if this is supposed to make you a better doctor.

So my GPA is ridiculously low (2 Fs, 3 Ds, 10 Cs, 4 Ws), I have no ECs, and my LORs will suck (I'm the guy that never went to class). But maybe my high MCAT, with a magnificent personal statement, I can get a couple interviews. Even then, I'm not a charmer, I'm cold, and I've been described in an internship review as 'arrogant and aloof' (!). Further, I'm not exactly photogenic (no joke: my mentor at the above-mentioned internship told me that my default facial expression is one of an unfriendly person you can't trust, and that my abrasive personality only reinforces that first impression).

I can probably add more gloom to this, but I'm confident (probably in my arrogance) that when I get into med school, I'm gonna do well and I'm gonna stand out. I've made some adjustments in the past year to my attitude towards school, my methods of studying, and the way I deal with people and myself. Maybe I can sell this and convince them that my success in medicine is a foregone conclusion, and that they should just let me in now rather than make me waste my time and money doing an SMP and pushing weelchairs.
