Congrats on the successful cycle! Were your shadowing hours mostly through school programs? I have been having some trouble finding doctors around LA that will allow me to shadow .. :(

Thanks! Actually, none of the shadowing I did was through school programs. Instead, I looked up docs affiliated with UCLA Health System whose work I was really interested in. I then emailed ~15 of them, because many receive 100's of emails per day. Only 3 replied, but I knew that they would ultimately become great mentors because they took time out of their busy day to reply to me. In the email I sent them, I wrote one or two paragraphs about who I am, my motivation for medicine, how my research pertains to their clinical work (professors LOVE undergrads who are doing research, and if you can tie your bench research into their clinical endeavors it will not only help you land a shadowing gig but will also be great material for interviews), and why I want to work with them specifically. I know its sometimes hard to find MD's to shadow, so email as many as you can and eventually you will find a supportive and inspirational role model. I decided to start shadowing instead of volunteering at the hospital, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. Good luck, let me know how it goes!

You still will get in regardless, your stats are good plus, you helped the underserved! Good luck! I know, this is a hectic process and I cannot wait until this is done.

Thanks a lot! Yes, it is a very crazy, random process, but absolutely worth it in the end. Good luck as well :)
