Summary of Application Experience
Very glad to have an acceptance to one of my top-choice schools and had a great interview at my second top-choice school, so this application cycle is officially over for me!
Tips for others:
I had originally only intended to apply to around 5 MD schools, including my two top choices, however after reading numerous forums/discussions on SDN of other applicants talking about the 20-some schools they were applying to (some as high as 30!) I panicked last minute and added a bunch more schools to my list- schools that I had never had any interest in attending (and still don't). I would say this process is all about going with your gut feeling. Be honest with yourself- if you think your application has the necessary qualities to get into medical school, then apply where you want to go (throw in some safety schools, just in case), but don't waste the extra money like I did on schools that do not fit and where you would be miserable attending.
I can't stress this enough: consider opening up an airline credit card. I opened a United Explorer card at the beginning of this cycle, put all my usual monthly expenditures on it for 3 months (and immediately paid them off), and with the current promotion running at the time, this awarded me 50,000 United frequent flier miles! I only ever paid for one round trip ticket to my first interview. For the two other interviews I intended, I flew in for free (and had priority boarding and free check-ins). If you are good with your finances and able to pay off your credit cards immediately, then seriously consider this. It saved me over $1,000 in the long run on airfare alone.
